Why Sabrina Carpenter Fans Think Her New Album References Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello
View Date:2025-01-20 00:53:17
Sabrina Carpenter's latest album might not be so sweet for everyone.
With the release of Short n' Sweet Aug. 23, fans believe the "Espresso" singer was throwing shade on different songs about her rumored romance with Shawn Mendes, as well as his ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello.
The music video for "Taste," the album's opening track, follows two women (played by Sabrina and Jenna Ortega) as they fight to the death over the same guy, over and over again. One fan pointed to the casting and wrote on X in Portuguese via translation, “Coincidence or not, Jenna Ortega looks a lot like Camila Cabello.”
Fans also noticed that, on the track, Sabrina sends a message to her ex's new girlfriend, singing, "You're wonderin' why half his clothes went missin' / My body's where they're at." And she seemed to do just that in December when the "Please Please Please" singer raised eyebrows after she was seen wearing what seemed to be Shawn's fleece pullover in a Christmas TikTok video.
Another fan pointed out a possible Easter egg in Sabrina’s music video—a tombstone to her unnamed ex that seemingly hinted she was calling Shawn dead to her. The user noted online, “Sabrina even put the year he was born.”
She also sings about being caught in the middle of her lover’s on-again-off-again relationship, adding, “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”
Shawn and Camila certainly appear to fit the bill for being hot and cold. The pair dated from 2019 to 2021 before he was photographed with Sabrina while having dinner in Los Angeles and in February 2023, sparking romance rumors. But two months later, the “Mercy” singer and the Fifth Harmony alum were spotted kissing at Coachella.
In her song “Coincidence,” Sabrina sings, “Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side? / Damnit, she looks kinda like the girl you outgrew / At least that’s what you said / What a coincidence / Oh, wow, you just broke up again.”
One fan wrote on X with a screenshot of the lyrics, “I’m so sorry but Sabrina Carpenter ate Shawn and Camila up.”
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old took shots at an ex who practices meditation and mindfulness—but can also be manipulative—in her song “Dumb & Poetic.”
In the first verse, she sings, “Cherry-pick lines like they're words you invented / Gold star for highbrow manipulation / And ‘love everyone’ is your favorite quotation / Try to come off like you're soft and well-spoken / Jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen.”
Coincidentally, Shawn sang “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen at his recent shows.
In the second verse she adds, “Save all your breath for your form meditation / You’re so empathetic, you’d make a great wife / And I promise the mushrooms aren’t changing your life.”
Alongside the lyrics, one fan shared a headline from The Sun about Shawn discussing how he’s used mushrooms to help with his anxiety. The article quotes him as telling a crowd at his London concert Aug. 13, “I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried mushrooms but it’s a crazy thing.”
But another reason fans think some songs are about the “Stitches” singer? Well, the title of the album.
“I called it Short n’ Sweet for multiple reasons. It was not because I’m vertically challenged,” she explained during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had, and they affected me the most.”
